Design the handoff

Build the company to outgrow the people who started its motion.

It is easy for a venture studio, founding team, or unusually involved investor to measure contribution by how much the company still needs them. Full calendars look like commitment. Constant escalation feels like relevance. Neither is evidence that an institution is being built.

A real handoff is not a meeting at the end or a folder of documents. It begins with the first decision. Choices need owners. Operating rhythms need to survive the person who introduced them. Context needs to live where the next hire can find it, and authority has to move with responsibility rather than lag behind it.

Dependency often looks healthy from inside. The same people are invited because they know the history. A founder waits for one more review because the review is useful. The work keeps moving, but only through a narrowing set of hands. Help has become an invisible ceiling.

So we design our absence as deliberately as our involvement. Transfer the judgement, not only the task. Build a cadence, then leave it in someone else’s hands. The work is finished when the company can make the next good decision without asking the people who made the first one.

Bring us the idea before it is safe.

The best moment to talk to us is the moment the old answer stops being obviously right — long before the deck exists. Tell us what changed, and why you cannot stop thinking about it.
